NOCTULA –  Environmental Consultants was responsible for monitoring the activity and mortality of bats in Sobrado’s Wind Farm.

The project constitutes the Bats Monitoring Plan to implement three times a year during the operation phase (2014-2029). This plan was developed following strictly the guidelines set out in the Declaration of Environmental Impact, emitted for the project under study, and the general guidelines provided by Instituto de Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF).

The implementation of the Bats Monitoring Plan of the Sobrado’s wind farm aims at evaluate the project’s long-term effects on bats, determining the degree of change in communities and mortality induced by the operation phase.

Monitoring parameters of the activity and mortality of bats:

1. Determining the use that the different species of bats make of the studied area, at a spatial and temporal level, depending on the operation or not of the wind turbines;

2. Inventorying of shelters in the area of the wind farm and surroundings, including shelters of cave, arboreal and cryptic species;

3. Accounting for the number of dead individuals, by carrying out prospecting campaigns in the area surrounding the wind turbines;

4. Estimating potential lethality according to the efficiency rates of corpses counts (detectability rate) and its decomposition or removal by predators.
